The First Annual Spinlab Group Picnic

Motivated by the Andy’s desire to try Spam Musubi, Adam organized the group’s first Group Picnic at Lake Lansing Park North. According to Courtney, the only Real Spam Musubi is one that is cooked in a car. Since we had no care volunteers, there was no RSM. We did have BBQ ribs,…

Farewell Jennifer & Martin!

Jennifer Wenzl and her husband Martin Eibach (a postdoc with the Ion Trapping/Mass Measurements Group) are leaving the NSCL to go back to Germany. Jennifer received her Ph.D. in December of 2013 from the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz in the field of Soft Condensed Matter Physics. She joined Spinlab in September of…

Jake and Kristen Graduate!

Two Spinlab undergrads graduated over the weekend. Jake Huneau graduated with a B.S. in Physics from the Lyman-Briggs College and Kristen Parzuchowski graduates with a B.S. in Physics from the Honors College. Jake joined the group in the Fall 2014 when Spinlab was just an empty room. He made two…

Evan wins First Place in the UURAF Poster Competition!

Being able to take part in UURAF was a great opportunity to learn how to present research in a professional environment. Probably the most useful part for me was the preparation of the poster. Having never made a scientific poster before, Jennifer was very helpful in giving me advice. By…

First Steps Towards Two-Photon Magnetometry Using Polarized Noble Gases

We are collaborating with Skyler Degenkolb and Prof. Tim Chupp from the University of Michigan on demonstrating two-photon magnetometry using nuclear-spin polarized noble gases. Spinlab happens to have an intense and tumble UV laser source needed for this project. The first step is to find the UV two-photon transition in…

The Great Laser Installation of 2016

The Spinlab tunable lasers from M-squared were installed this week. The GRUVY laser provides tunable single frequency laser light from 250-300 nm, 500-600 nm, and 700-1000 nm. The BLUREI laser provides tunable single frequency laser light from 350-500 nm and 700-1000 nm. Thanks Steven and Daniel!

The Great Laser Table Installation of 2016

Spinlab has two nonmagnetic optical tables fabricated from 304 and 316 stainless steel from TMC. They were installed on the morning of April 23, 2016. These tables provide a very stable and vibration-isolated platform for mounting lasers and performing atomic physics experiments. See how the 12 ft by 4 ft…
