Measuring the Yb Atomic Beam Flux

On Monday, December 5th the SADiCS team led by Kristen Parzuchowski performed an improved Yb flux measurement. Several improvements were implemented including covering the measurement chamber with a non-reflective black foil to reduce stray light and conducting a more precise scan over wavelengths to find the resonance wavelength of…

Fluorescence Spectrum of Impurities in Sapphire

In the week of Dec. 5th a first analysis of the background of a sapphire substrate was performed. The measurements were performed be Evan Ryan, an undergrad working for the SADiCS project. The graph below shows the scattering and fluorescence response of impurities within the sapphire substrate when illuminated…

Observation of a Two-Photon Transition in Xenon

This weekly win post is for the winner announced on October 3rd, for the work done during the week of Sept 26-30. The win this week was awarded to a group composed of Spinlab members Steven Fromm, Jaideep Singh, Liam Clink, and University of Michigan student Skyler Degenkolb. After many long…

Fluorescence Yield of Yb Inside Solid Ne

The win this week belongs to the SADiCS team, who have been working to detect single atoms in solid noble gases in order to measure rare nuclear reactions in an energy range best suited for astrophysics (more information can be found here). This week the SADiCS team consisting of Dustin Frisbie,…

First Steps Towards Two-Photon Magnetometry Using Polarized Noble Gases

We are collaborating with Skyler Degenkolb and Prof. Tim Chupp from the University of Michigan on demonstrating two-photon magnetometry using nuclear-spin polarized noble gases. Spinlab happens to have an intense and tumble UV laser source needed for this project. The first step is to find the UV two-photon transition in…

The Great Laser Installation of 2016

The Spinlab tunable lasers from M-squared were installed this week. The GRUVY laser provides tunable single frequency laser light from 250-300 nm, 500-600 nm, and 700-1000 nm. The BLUREI laser provides tunable single frequency laser light from 350-500 nm and 700-1000 nm. Thanks Steven and Daniel!

The Great Laser Table Installation of 2016

Spinlab has two nonmagnetic optical tables fabricated from 304 and 316 stainless steel from TMC. They were installed on the morning of April 23, 2016. These tables provide a very stable and vibration-isolated platform for mounting lasers and performing atomic physics experiments. See how the 12 ft by 4 ft…

Spinlab is Under Construction

Spinlab will require tunable single frequency lasers for much of our research. These lasers will have to be installed on stable & vibration-isolated optical tables which are enclosed in a dust-free clean-room style enclosure. These are being designed now, but, while we wait, we are manually removing the dust from above…
