Research Discussion Fall 2023: The FRIB-EDM3 Instrument

This presentation was a joint presentation between myself (Aiden Boyer) and Sebastian Miki-Silva, a former member of our group who became the first graduate student in our collaborator Xing Wu’s group. This talk was 30 minutes in length followed by 10 minutes of questions and was given as part of the Research Discussion series at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), which is a weekly seminar series where anyone at the lab can sign up to give a presentation on their research or an academically related topic (for example, a debate about the ethical use of AI). The context for Sebastian and I preparing this talk was to accumulate a set of slides that we could begin to iterate and improve upon throughout our graduate student career. I remember this presentation somewhat fondly as it taught me several lessons about giving a research talk. I think the most important takeaway from the experience was that it got me to plan every subsequent presentation as a storytelling experience – what is the most effective way I can tell the story about the research that I’ve done, and how can I make it interesting and memorable for my audience?
